Porta Medicea This is the entrance to the town square, with the coat of arms of the Medici family, five balls with the fleur-de-lis above the arch.
Torre Medicea: The 18 meter tower is misnamed "medicea", in fact it is the oldest structure of the town and built well before the arrival of the noted Medici. It went through a number of changes, some by the Medici family but others because of damage by earthquakes and lightning.
Chiesa della Madonna del Lago: This is a lovely church due to its external and internal architecture. The lake in front reflects its beautiful image. It was built by the rich and noble Anelli family.
Chiesa delle Anime Sante: This church, dedicated to the holy souls, is located in the town square. Mass is celebrated there on Sundays.
Logge della casa del Capitano: This renaissance style gallery with its elegant open arches was sculpted by stone masons brought from Tuscany by the Medici family. The building itself was occupied by the Germans during World War II, due to its proximity to the tower which gave them a clear view of the road in and out of the town.
La Buscella: This is a narrow opening in the last circle of the town wall. Many stories have been told about it, but the best known one tells of young couples meeting there for a furtive kiss.
Chiesa of S. Caterina: This is a small private church near the ruins of what once was the Palazzo Anelli. It was built by a member of the Anelli family in commemoration of his wife Caterina, who died prematurely.
Chiesa di S. Stefano Protomartyr: This is the church of the cemetery. It has an irregular shape because it was constructed in two phases. Originally it was much smaller, consisting of the sacristy, the altar and the apse. The bell tower is part of the old body and has been rebuilt numerous times due to earthquakes and lightning.
Chiesa Madre: This is the church of the cemetery. It has an irregular shape because it was constructed in two phases. Originally it was much smaller, consisting of the sacristy, the altar and the apse. The bell tower is part of the old body and has been rebuilt numerous times due to earthquakes and lightning.
Porta Lorda: This is the second gate to the town and it is at the opposite end of the porta medicea. Its name "lorda", meaning "dirty", comes from the fact that in past times the trash of the town was placed there.
Palazzo delle Logge: Situated near the piazza medicea, and recently restored, it is one of the most beautiful buildings in the town. Its logge were created by the same stone masons who sculpted those of the Casa del Capitano.
Case torri o case muri: Santo Stefano doesn't have actual walls, so it was the houses themselves which provided protection. They were very high with thick walls and very small square windows from which it was easy to defend and difficult to attack. The houses were built in such a way that only the entrances to the barns and stables were accessible from the outside walls. The living quarters could be entered only from the interior streets of the town.
