SANTO STEFANO DI SESSANIO, THE TOWN

In the heart of the Grand Sasso National Park, the road that leads to Santo Stefano unwinds between open fields cleared of stones by the peasants who lived in the area.
The village, appearing from a distance with its tower rising above the houses, is a truly enchanting sight.

Walking through the streets of this town, its houses constructed with white limestone darkened by time, one is transported back to the medieval era.

The area is full of hiking and backpacking trails with guides available for climbing and traversing the mountains.
The ever more popular sport of nordic-walking, uses every muscle, yet places no undue strain on the body. On the contrary, the use of poles lessens fatigue because the effort is better distributed.

One can enjoy the scenery at its fullest by taking long horseback rides along paths and old mule trails in the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Near Santo Stefano on the plateau of Campo Imperatore one can practice all the winter sports: alpine or cross-country skiing, hiking with snow-shoes, or the new sport of snow-kiting. Only 25Km away one may downhill ski on the slopes of the Gran Sasso or of Campo Felice, in the Sirente-Velino chain.
Those who love history and culture will appreciate the many archeological riches nearby and within the entire Grand Sasso National Park.
